James Gandolfini was born on 18 September 1961 in West Wood, New Jersey. He is the son of James Gandolfini, chief of building maintenance at Paramus Catholic High School, and Joan, a school nutritionist. His parents were Italian immigrants and they often spoke in Italian. He studied in New Jersey, at the Park Ridge High School. He acted in school plays. After this, he did a B.A in communications from Rutgers University. He also worked there as a bouncer in the pub, which was inside the University campus.
He is the brother of Johanna Antonacci, manager of the Family Division of the New Jersey Superior Court in Hackensack, New Jersey. He is married to Deborah Lin. He was earlier married to Marcy Wudarski and they have one child. While riding on his Vespa scooter, he was hit by a taxi in 2006, and had to undergo a knee surgery. He is attached with The Octoberwoman Foundation for Breast Cancer Research. He has also appeared in various commercials with Greg Schiano, to promote Rutgers football.
In his past, he has worked as a motel manager in Kansas, Missouri. Then, he started performing in ‘On the Waterfront’ for six months, which was a Broadway production. He later appeared in a film ‘True Romance’ (1993). It was romantic thriller, in which he played the character of “Virgil“. He appeared in some more films like ‘Terminal Velocity’, ‘Night Falls on Manhattan’, ‘Fallen‘, ‘The Man Who Wasn’t There’, ‘Lonely Hearts’, ‘Where The Wild Things Are’, etc. In 2009, he appeared once again in Broadway’s production for ‘God of Carnage’.
His appeared on the TV series ‘The Sopranos’ as a mafia boss named “Tony Soprano“. He was listed as the 42nd Greatest TV Icon of All Time by Entertainment Weekly for his role of “Tony Soprano“. He has also produced a documentary that looks at the physical and emotional costs of war while centering on the injured Iraq veterans and their devoted services to America. This documentary was for HBO.
He won the Golden Globe Award for his role in ‘The Sopranos’ in 2000 in the category of Best Performance by an Actor in a TV- Series-Drama. He was nominated under same category again from 2001 to 2003 for the Golden Globe Award. He won three Emmy Awards, (2000-2003) and was nominated three times for it (1999, 2004 &2007), in the category - Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for ‘The Sopranos’. He won the Screen Actors Guild Awards, (2000, 2003 & 2008), and was nominated for the same in 1996, 2001, 2002, 2005 & 2007. The category was - Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series for ‘The Sopranos’. He was also nominated in various other awards in vivid categories and he won many of them.

James Gandolfini is playing the role of “Tony Soprano” in ‘The Sopranos’ tv show. He is the boss of the DiMeo Crime Family, which is northern New Jersey’s most powerful criminal organization. His uncle Corrado John Soprano, affectionately known as Junior, was once very close to him and acted as a father figure to him. The relations with his uncle were strained, when a dissatisfied Junior, became more marginalized in the organization, as the probe of FBI into his activities increased.
